Quack-tastic Facts

Ducks aren't just cute; they are evolutionary masterpieces. Flip the cards to dive deeper.

Waterproof Feathers

Micro-structures & preen oil create a hydrophobic barrier.

The Preen Gland

Located near the tail (uropygial gland), it secretes waxy oil. Ducks spread this meticulously over feathers, creating a contact angle > 150° — superhydrophobicity!

340° Vision

Eyes on the sides of their heads give near-panoramic view.

Tetrachromats

Ducks see UV light! They have 4 cone types (vs human 3). Feathers that look dull to us flash vibrant patterns in UV for mating displays.

Half-Brain Sleep

Unihemispheric slow-wave sleep keeps one eye open.

Sentinel System

In a row, the end ducks keep their outer eye open (connected to the awake hemisphere) scanning for predators, while inner ducks sleep fully.

Egg Dumping

Females often lay eggs in other ducks' nests (brood parasitism).

Cooperative Breeding

Species like the Ruddy Duck engage in "egg dumping" to spread genetic risk. Host females often incubate them indiscriminately.

No Teeth, Lamellae

Serrated bill edges act like a filter-feeding comb.

Hydrodynamic Sieves

Lamellae spacing varies by species. Shovelers have ~120 lamellae/inch for fine plankton; Mergansers have fewer, sharper ones for gripping fish.

Not All Quack

Only female Mallards make the classic "quack".

Whistles & Grunts

Male Mallards rasp. Wood Ducks whistle "jeeee". Muscovies hiss. The "quack" is a contact call; the "decrescendo call" (loud then soft) signals location.

Exotic

Mandarin Duck Aix galericulata

The "living jewel" of East Asia. Males sport elaborate "sails" on their backs.

📍 East Asia ⚖️ 400-700g 🌳 Perching Duck
Ubiquitous

Mallard Anas platyrhynchos

The ancestor of most domestic ducks. Incredibly adaptable, found on every continent except Antarctica.

📍 Global ⚖️ 0.7-1.6kg 🌊 Dabbling Duck
N. America

Wood Duck Aix sponsa

Nests in tree cavities! Ducklings jump from heights up to 50ft (15m) days after hatching.

📍 N. America ⚖️ 450-850g 🌳 Perching Duck
Stiff-tail

Ruddy Duck Oxyura jamaicensis

Males have bright blue bills in breeding season. They barely walk on land; built for diving.

📍 Americas ⚖️ 300-850g 🤿 Stiff-tailed Diver
Domesticated

Muscovy Duck Cairina moschata

Not descended from Mallards. Red facial caruncles. They don't quack — they hiss and trill.

📍 Americas ⚖️ 2.7-4.5kg 🌳 Perching / Heavy
Sea Duck

Harlequin Duck Histrionicus histrionicus

Masters of turbulent white water. They swim in rapids that would drown other birds.

📍 Arctic/Subarctic ⚖️ 500-700g 🌊 Sea Duck / Diver
Biomechanics

Duck Physics & Hydrodynamics

Why they float, fly, and stay dry — explained with math.

Archimedes' Principle

Fb (Buoyancy) mg (Weight)

Ducks float high because Vsub (submerged volume) is small. Their bones are pneumatic (air-filled), and air sacs throughout the body lower average density to ~0.3 g/cm³ (water is 1.0). They actively control Vsub by compressing feathers and adjusting air sac volume.

Superhydrophobicity (The Lotus Effect)

θ > 150° Trapped Air Layer (Plastron)

Feather barbules create a hierarchical micro/nano structure. Air gets trapped (plastron), preventing water contact. The contact angle θ exceeds 150°. Pressure ΔP required to force water between barbs is huge, so droplets roll off, taking dirt with them (self-cleaning).

V-Formation Aerodynamics

Wingtip vortices create upwash behind and to the side. Following birds position wings in this rising air, reducing induced drag Di by up to 20-30%. They synchronize wingbeats (phase locking) to maximize the effect. The lead bird rotates to share the burden.
